Behind The Battle Stories
Behind every battle, there are a few interesting stories. Here are two that will give one an insight of the atmosphere and environment of this bloody battle.
THE SYMBOLIC DEATH
Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel "Tiger" Phillipps, seeing that the operation was failing stood up on his boat and signaled to the following rear boats that they should reroute and retreat, was killed moments later, mid-sentence, with a rifle shot through the head. This symbolized the Dieppe Raid as a whole for Canada.
The Little Regiment That Could
Once Allied ships reached the shore, they were massacred due to the awoken shore-stationed Germans.
The #3 Commando forced to retreat, however 1 small regiment of 20 men from the fleet managed to sneak through a gully without getting spotted and managed to get within 180 metres of the German artillery. With precise sniping, they prevented Germany from firing on the battleships for 2.5 hours before safe evacuation.
A Cross of Valour
Sniper rifles used by the 20 men who miraculously survived and distracted the Germans from firing on the protecting naval ships
