An Unexpected Meeting

THE DIEPPE RAID PART I

  • On August 19th 1942, at 3:45 am, Heading across the English channel and slowly approaching the French port of Dieppe, Fleets #3 Commando and the Royal Regiment of Canada (RRC) encounter a small German Convoy on the way to Puys and Berneval.
  • Both engage and loudly fire, causing a high alert which then turns into a formation of German soldiers stationed along the shore.
  • Already, the Allied forces are at a disadvantage of their surprise element has vanished.

  • By 4:50 am all planned initial fleets are advancing to their targets however, with varied results, the raid has begun.
  • #4 Commando was the only success as they stormed Varengeville and neutralized the battery.
  • The RRC were obliterated in Puys as arriving late, they were torn apart by the ready Germans.  Only 60 out of 543 men were successfully extracted.  The rest were killed or taken prisoner.

  • At 5:20 am, the Essex Scottish Regiment is launched to storm the town area of Dieppe along with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry and the 14th Canadian Army Tank Regiment as support.  Their mission is to neutralize the area of high number of hostile Germans.
  • However, these battalions ran into trouble almost immediately as the beach was a terrain of pebble.  This impeded tank movement greatly and the strong tanks soon became extremely vulnerable.

  • The SSR wasn't much better as only a handful of the hundreds of men originally, made it to the target of Pourville.  Others were killed, or landed at the wrong destination.
  • Their co-battalion (QOCHC) were slightly more successful as out of every Allied battalion, they stormed the deepest into the German territory, however, they were overwhelmed and with no backup support, they were forced to retreat.
  • At this time, the main assault is commenced.
